About pickananimal.com
A small, independent side project built around one useful little tool.
What this site does
The Random Animal Generator lets you pick between 1 and 99 unique animals at a time, drawn from a fixed pool of 7,119 species with both a common name and a scientific name. You can narrow the pool to a single animal group, or paste your own list. Everything runs in your browser — no account, no sign-up, no uploads.
Where the animal data comes from
Every name is a real species pulled from the iNaturalist public API (/v1/taxa, rank=species) on 2026-10-13, then filtered to species that have a common name in the source. Nothing here is invented to pad the count, and scientific names follow iNaturalist's own taxonomy.
Who runs it
pickananimal.com is an independent project maintained by the site's small team. We are not affiliated with iNaturalist beyond using their open data under its public API. If you have a question, a correction, or a suggestion, the fastest way to reach us is contact@pickananimal.com.
Why it exists
We built it for drawing and writing prompts, classrooms, quizzes, and tabletop games — anywhere you need a quick, varied, no-repeats animal list without making the choices yourself. It stays free and ad-free for now; see the Privacy Policy for what changes if that ever does.
